Indianapolis Youth Commission

Our Purpose

As an innovative approach to driving positive change in Indianapolis moving forward, the Indianapolis Youth Commission was formed to strategically integrate the voices of area youth into relevant areas of the government planning and public policy process. In addition, the Indianapolis Youth Commission will facilitate opportunities to connect with the business leaders and the larger community. By inviting youth to participate in and drive the conversations around “How to improve outcomes for local youth” we will be able incorporate changes that have a greater impact on our community. The Indianapolis Youth Commission also distinguishes itself by seeking to engage youth who are or have been "system involved" as members. We define system involved as youth who are they are currently or were formerly involved with the juvenile justice, child welfare, foster care, or other type of system of care.

Objectives

  • The Indianapolis Youth Commission will provide a youth perspective on key issues facing the City-County Council.

  • Commissioners will learn about the public policy process and the role of different stakeholders in developing solutions for the city.

  • Commissioners will develop problem solving and advocacy skills by engaging with city, non-profit and business leaders working on issues impacting the city.

The Indianapolis Youth Commission is not currently accepting applications for the 2022-2023 session. Please check back Summer of 2023 for the online application.

 

The Role of the Youth Commission

·         Learn the priorities of the City of Indianapolis

·         Provide a youth perspective on issues facing the City of Indianapolis

·         Serve as constituent representatives to the City of Indianapolis

·         Engage with City and Business leaders regarding issues facing the City of Indianapolis
